BETWEEN SESSIONS · VALUES CARD SORT

Put words to what matters.

A values card sort is a way to notice what you care about and gather something you may want to explore in a conversation.

What are values?

Values are qualities and directions you care about, such as honesty, connection, independence, or creativity. You decide what each word means in your life.

A goal is something you can complete. A value can help you understand why that goal matters. Calling a friend is one possible way to express connection; it does not finish the work of being connected.

When two things matter

You might value connection and need more independence. You may want to be honest and feel uneasy about a difficult conversation. The sort gives you words for what matters on each side, without asking you to resolve the tension immediately.

How the activity works

  1. Sort. Explore 83 values cards and place as many as you want into three importance groups. You can leave cards unmarked.
  2. Choose. Select one to five values you would like to spend time with. The others can still matter.
  3. Reflect. Notice what stands out and what you would like to talk through. Every reflection question is optional.

The summary brings your chosen values and any notes together. It is a starting point for a conversation, with no diagnosis, personality score, or requirement to make an action plan.

No account or code needed. Your answers stay in this page for this visit. Save or print your summary before refreshing or closing. Nothing is sent to Alex.

What could I bring into a session?

A value that surprised you. A choice that was hard to make. A question you would like help putting into words. Your chosen values alone are enough—you do not need to have it worked out.

How do I keep my results?

On the final screen, choose “Print / save as PDF.” Select “Save as PDF” in your device’s print options, or print a copy. Bring it to your next session. Your work is not saved in an online account, and you can also simply write down the values you chose.

Where do the cards come from?

The collection is adapted from the Personal Values Card Sort by W. R. Miller, J. C’de Baca, D. B. Matthews, and P. L. Wilbourne, University of New Mexico, 2001.
